The group is working on a range of projects/areas as outlined below, often working closely with collaborators from both academia and industry given the multi-disciplinary nature of our research. Much of our work is concerned with crystal engineering, host-guest chemistry, self- and metal-directed assembly, all of which can be utilised to form new and exciting supramolecular systems.

Automation / The Vortex Fluidic Device
Working in collaboration with Prof. Colin Raston – the inventor of the Vortex Fluidic Device (VFD) – we have teamed up with electrical engineers at HWU to automate this microfluidic reactor comprising a high-speed rotating tube, allowing this to operate in either confined or continuous flow modes. The tube rotates at speeds up to 9000 rpm, generating centrifugal forces that push reaction mixtures up the tube. This creates thin films against the inside walls of the tube, resulting in shear forces which ultimately produce mechanical energy to accelerate chemical reactions. Themes of photocatalysis are also being investigated with the VFD and this is producing exciting results that will be published shortly.
